Subject: Corny Keg ?

I have a used corny keg with a loose fitting top. It appears as though the metal bar that you flip to clamp the top shut is slightly bent and keeping the top from sealing well. I don't have much experince with these things and was wondering about a repair. Ok to just try and bend the metal bar back into shape that will make it close tighter? Or are these things just good for one shot?

I've taken pliers and bent the bar back in place. No harm as long as that is all you are bending (ie not the lid as well). Also check the o-ring around the lid. If it looks questionable change it (they're cheap). In general I don't worry about the clamp fitting well. A little co2 should seal the keg (ie once it has pressure it shouldn't be an issue). Or are these things just good for one shot? You can try bending the bar. Corny keg lids are actually sealed by internal pressure though. All the bar really does is hold the lid tight enough so that your initial CO2 pressure has a chance to build up. Once you've got pressure in the keg, you could even unlock the bar and the lid would remain sealed. FWIW, I've got a couple with loose bars. All I do is grab the bar and pull up on it while I've hitting the keg with my initial carbonation pressure. Basically just putting enough force on the lid so that the gas doesn't escape. If bending it doesn't work and you are really worried about it, you can get replacement lids for fairly cheap. $10 or something like that. John.

I usually have to hold onto the clamp out of position and give it a little twist while pressurizing the keg to get the lid to seal firmly. Always give the fittings and lid a little squirt of sanitizer afterwards to check for gas leaks.

Or are these things just good for one shot? Brian, I did a little write up a while ago on this issue. Check it out and see if it helps you: http://www.pjmuth.org/beerstuff/Keg_lid.htm I hope so. PJ
