follow up on the moldy blowoff bucket. Can I save this bucket? Also my blowoff tube was in it. Can I clean and sanitize these items with PBW and StarSan or should I use bleach if I can save them? If bleack what ratio of bleack to water should I soak them in? Thanx in advance. Gerard

I have the darndest time trying to clean mold out of tubes. If you want to push it, hot is better than cold, but you might as well get yourself a small spool of the stuff and do over. There's a lot of paranoia over chlorophenols in beer due to using bleach in the cleaning process. I haven't had this problem, but I've been pretty judicious about rinsing anything that's been touching bleach. I let the bleached item soak out in a ventilated area, dump, rinse, and *dry completely* before I consider using it--where it probably sees some more water anyways. This is a plastic bucket, right? Don't scrub it with something too abrasive, because that'll leave little scratches for nasties to foster themselves. That would be a bigger issue then that mold.

You should be able to save them without any trouble. IMO, just a thorough cleaning/sanitizing would be fine. A couple "glugs" of bleach in 5 gallons should be plenty (how's that for precise measurements). I don't remember off the top of my head what the recommended amount of bleach is, but it's not a lot. Couple ounces per 5 gallons, or something like that. In reality though, since the bucket and tubing is all just plastic, I don't think you can hurt anything by using too much bleach so I wouldn't worry about it. John.
