Subject: Chiller Question

I am looking at getting a wort chiller (brew pot and cooker also, any
good package deals?) Are immersion chillers the best option, because
the "cold break" stays in the pot and is not siphoned/drained into the
fermenter? It would seem to me that counter flow and plate chillers
would pass the cold break into the fermenter. I realise that the
counter flow and plate are more efficient. So is it a trade off time
versus efficency?

Run a Dogpile search and you'll see a lot of support for both sides

I haven't really seen any chiller/pot/cooker package deals. IMO, the
best way to get a pot/cooker is to buy a "turkey fryer" kit from a
hardware or outdoor store. They are usually on pretty good sales after
Thanksgiving.

Regarding the chiller, I prefer an immersion chiller, but others prefer
counterflow or plate chillers. It's all down to your preference. Cold
break doesn't actually do much damage, if any. So preventing it from
getting into the fermenter is not something that should be high on
your priority list. Hot break is the one that you generally want to try
and keep out, if you can.

If you want to do 10 gallon batches, do a search for an 80 qt pot. They
are all over for $60. You just need to put the valve on it for draining.

I prefer NOT to use a valve in a wort pot since I can direct the pickup
better avoiding the trub blob with a siphon/pump.
Where do u live?...I might be able to find a boil pot for U.
