Subject: Chicago water, filtering, and ProMash Water experts NEEDED!

So I live in Chicago... It took me FOREVER to find my water profile online... leave it to city to make miles or red tape just to find out the Mg level in my water... So here is what I got: Ca:32.5 Mg:11 Na:7 SO4:27 Cl:14 HCO3:65 Does that sound right? Also, I filter my water... It's just a PUR water filter that attachs to the faucet... I can't afford the under the counter filters, but my question is, how does the filtering change the composition of the water? The pH? You guys have never let me down in your answers! Thanks so much!

try to google your public works dept for your county. If you have a well (most likely not in FL) your totally out of luck. If you are losing sleep over your water you can check out companys to send water away and get an analysis on. It's about 15-20 bucks, but you get everything you could want to know about it. especially lead.... You could also just get luck and see if someone else has posted it on this forum.... hope this helps!

However, Chicago water comes from Lake Michigan and is very "soft" water which makes it very pleasant to drink and bathe in. If you let a pitcher sit out overnight, the chlorine will outgas to the extent that it is no longer detectable to the taste and very becomes very nice drinking water. For what it's worth, I moved from Chicago to Marengo which is about 50 miles west and found that my beer improved significantly. I use water right from our well which has a lot of iron and sulfur smell to it. Here in Houston we have a local pool supply that touts 'free water analysis' on a sign on the storefront. I'm very framiliar with Marengo I'm frequently out near Genoa and Dekalb. Most of the homes out there that have wells are on a softener... I assume you are too? Do you filter your water? what changes did you make in you brewing procedure??? I've often thought about brewing a pale with the water out there... I thought it might fit... I just wish that I could get ride of the sulfur before brewing...

We filter the drinking water with some sort of magic filter that lasts about 6 months and produces water indistinguishable (in flavor) from Chicago water minus chlorine. I used to use those charcoal filters from the hardware store but they only last about two weeks before the smell of sulfur returned.
