I know I've asked a similar question here and/or elsewhere, but
I still have no good solution.

I have put a thermometer in my chest freezer (empty) and found
the high-end temperature to be 20F (-6.7C). The Chest

The wired controller on MoreBeer is 89$ here:
http://morebeer.com/product.html?product_id=16664
http://morebeer.com/product.html?product_id=16666

while the unwired controller is a more fair price:

Shipping is included in the $89 though. The Ebay item is currently $77 but
shipping (for me at least) comes to a little over $8. That makes the
prices pretty close. IMO, I'd rather deal with a known company than
with an unknown seller on Ebay, assuming that the prices are relatively
the same.

Yep, that's definitely a much cheaper way to go assuming that you feel
comfortable wiring up your own power cord. It's not difficult, but some
people are intimidated by electricity.

I'm struggling with the same problem.

I just bought a freezer and am already realizing it is going to change the
way I brew and keep beer for the better.

But $77.06 is a little steep for me for temp control. My used freezer was
only $150.

I found nice plans for a home-made AVR-based temperature controller:
http://www.myplace.nu/avr/thermo/index.htm for those with experience with
microcontrollers. I happen to have on-hand all the parts for it except for
the Dallas chip, so I'll probably give that a go eventually.

But I need something now. I haven't made it down to Home Depot to check out
cheap digital home HVAC thermostats yet, but our digital home thermostat I
think was about $15 and goes down to 45F. Wiring it up to the freezer will
require some electrical know-how.

It also looks like on my freezer there is a tiny adjustment screw on the
stock thermostat (under some tape). I haven't played with that yet, it may
be a very easy way to get by for the time being.

Any cheap and effective ideas would be very helpful.

Your message was cut off, but if I may suggest:

This is a pre-wired controller carried by Thargrav- I've done quite a
bit of business there- but you plug your freezer into this, and then
the controller into the wall. That then overrides the internal
thermometer in the freezer and it will now operate like a 'fridge- you
set the 'cold' point, the temperature swing (how warm it can get before
it turns back on), and you're set.

Is that what you were looking for?

Morebeer has the same controller for basically the same price, so I wouldn't
get into a bidding war on the Ebay one. Unless you do the "Buy it Now"
option, I'd just go to morebeer instead.

After reading the other responses, it seems no one has mentioned the
product by Johnson, shown here at the Northern Brewer site. Just over
$50, and I'm very happy with mine. Needs no fiddling with. Just plug
the freezer into it, and the control into the wall.

IMO, both the Johnson and Ranco are good brands. The Johnson you're looking
at is an analog controller, where the Ranco mentioned previously is a digital
one. That probably explains the price difference.
