FedEx just came and dropped of my order of 2 reconditioned
cornies. $33 for the two plus $14 shipping. They're
in excellent shape (from my visual inspection) so I
think I got a great deal. Not affiliated.....

A few years ago, one of my neighbors had 3 of them out during their garage
sale trying to sell them. Nobody was interested. At the end of the day
she offered them to me at $5 each. One was missing the O-ring so I said I
didn't want it. She tossed it in for free just to get it off her hands.
:D 3 cornies for $10. I figured it was worth the risk if they were junk
then I was only out $10. Got a new gasket kit for all of them, cleaned
them up and I've been serving beer in them without a problem for about 4
years.

Good story! Pity you missed out on the kegs!

My good drinking friend (Now in Chicago working at a brewery there)
brought three soda kegs back form Hawaii to Tokyo as carry-on
baggage a couple of year's ago. I can just imagine the looks he got
at check-in, on the plane and especially at Japanese customs! Wish
I'd been with him to see it!

That IS a good deal! If i didn't have 15 already I'd order some more!!

;-]

I got mine probaby 12 years ago. All of the local 7-11s switched to the
"bag-in-a-box" for their soda syrups. They set all of their empty Cornies
out back for the Pepsi/Coke men to pick up. I would just stop by and
"borrow" a couple at a time. They never seem to miss them. In fact! (quick
story):

About 10 years ago, there was a 7-11 in town that closed down and was all
boarded up. It had been that way for 6 months and I kept seeing a bunch of
Cornies sitting in an unlocked fenced area (gate wide open) behind the
building. I was telling a fellow homebrewer about this at darts one night
and we decided we were going to stop by and "rescue" those poor things! Well
he followed me into the parking lot and we just set there making sure there
wasn't anyone watching us. (I mean come on! They were sitting there for 6
months so I'm sure the Coke and Pepsi guys didn't want them! What's the
harm?).

As soon as we got out of are vehicles, 4 cop cars came flying into the
parking lot with their cherry-tops a'blazin' and their spotlights shining
right in our faces. After several minutes of questioning, we assured them
that we were having car trouble and just pulled into a well lit place to
check it out. One of the deputies recognized me and said they had a big
problem with drug dealings going on behind the old building. They thought WE
were dealing! I finally confessed what we were doing and he said. "Do that
during the daytime. And you didn't hear me sat that!"

I never did go back and get them. Someone probably sold them to a salvage
yard for 5 bucks a piece.....

In college I traded a case of homebrew to the campus Coca Cola guy for a
regulator, keg, cobra tap, and fittings. The 20# co2 tank came from the
Godfather's pizza where I was working. They had switched to a huge fill
in place tank and the local Coca Cola company never came to get the old
20#ers.

A few years later I had moved back home and married. So I was broke. I
went down to my local Coca Cola distributer, walked in the back door of
the loading bays and quite loudly asked, "who likes beer?" I left two
six packs lighter but with two more kegs.

I tried this again once I got back into brewing, but apparently the
folks down there don't like beer so much anymore. Now I have a delima, I
would like to buy some kit to make my brewing a little easier, but also
need more kegs, especially if my brewing is going to get easier. How do
you all relegate where to apply your brewing funds?

The rule is: For every dollar she spends on shoes, I get
to spend a dollar on hobbies.

This gives me just slightly less than infinite dollars to
work with, so relegation is not an issue.

Absolutely true. Buying and owning the raw ingredients is not a crime
but as soon as your homebrew goes over 1% ABV you're breaking the law.
Like with anything else, the government protects the interests of its
funders, err.. I mean big business... err.. I mean.... :-)

Are these the same Japanese that turn a semi-blind eye to brewing? You
can buy the equipment. You can buy the supplies as long as you swear
they aren't for making alcohol. You can even drink the beer. You just
can't admit you made it. Gods, what a bunch of whiners. All of my
information came from 2 U.S servicemen stationed on U.S. bases on
Japanese territories many yrears ago.

A few years ago I told my sister-in-law, a department manager in a
large grocery store, that I was looking for cornie kegs. She then
bugged the Pepsi delivery guy a couple times a week for a month or so
until he just gave her a keg just to shut her up.

About the same time, I noticed a cornie keg sitting on the sidewalk in
front of a Salvation Army store. I went inside and asked about it. The
manager said that someone tried to donate it but they wouldn't take it.
The person apparently just abandoned it out front instead of hauling
it home. I offered to dispose of it since it was in the way of sidewalk
traffic and the manager thanked me.

I have also found free kegs next to dumpsters behind closed down
restaurants (even got a 20# CO2 tank that way). Yard sales are also
another way to pick up used kegs for cheap. You just need patience and
they will come your way if you are paying attention.

Imelda is a rank amateur. My wife's shoe quonset recently
supplanted Pluto as our ninth planet and has been wreaking
havoc with the tides along the Gulf Coast. The upside is
that it's sort of cool to own one's own weather system.
