The secrets to really cheap beer are simple and straight-forward:

1) Make light beer. Shoot for only 4 to 4.5% alcohol.
2) Use dry yeast if possible. Liquid yeast is expensive. If you must use
liquid yeast, use it over and over so you don't have to blow $7 on every
batch. I save yeast from the primary back into the original White Labs tube
and thus reuse several times before it's all dead (e.g., if it sits in the
fridge for more than 6 months).
3) Limit the hop additions. Try to use 1 ounce or less hops for the whole
recipe. If you can do a single addition at 60 minutes, perfect. If not,
limit your flavor and aroma additions to just 1/4 ounce or less. Better
yet, use homegrown hops and don't worry about money at all.

And perhaps most important of all, for a man on a budget such as yourself
and myself, don't give in to temptation to spend hundreds of dollars on
fancy equipment. I'm about as cheap as they get. I don't have a grain mill
(I use my regular household blender -- yes, it works fine); I don't have any
valves on my cooler mash tun (just use the spigot cap it comes with -- yes,
it works fine); I don't use an immersion chiller (dunk the fermentation
bucket in an ice bath -- wow, rocket science!); I don't have an aeration
stone (ever heard of a big plastic spoon?).

My cheapest batch ever was about $9 for 3 gallons, or 39 cents per bottle or
thereabouts, and that was with several specialty grains and two hop
additions (see below). My cheapest extract batch was $23 for 5 gallons, or
52 cents per bottle. Extract runs a little more, but I'd still say 52 cents
per bottle ain't too bad. I've never purposely tried to brew cheaper than
that, but if you keep it real simple, you should be able to brew for less
than 30 cents per bottle, and still make perfectly tasty beer.

Here's the recipe for that 39 cent blonde ale (3 gallons). Just made it a
couple months ago. Turned out yummy, I might add.... I'll be sure to make
it again without any tweaks necessary.

2.75 lb 2-row
0.67 lb Belgian Pils
0.38 lb Dry Wheat Malt Extract
0.38 lb Clover Honey (flameout)
0.25 lb Gambrinus Honey Malt
0.4 oz Saaz (60 min)
0.1 oz Saaz (10 min)
1 tsp calcium chloride (mash)
0.5 tsp Irish moss (15 min)
0.5 tsp Polyclar (secondary)
Nottingham ale yeast

Mash at 148 F with salt for 45 minutes. 75 minute boil. Add honey after
flameout. Ferment at 60 F for 8 days. Rack, add Polyclar, settle for 10
days at 60 F. Prime with scant 1/2 cup corn sugar and bottle. Allow 2-3
weeks to carbonate.

You could chop out the salt, Irish moss, and Polyclar and still make great
beer, these ingredients are all optional. Heck, you could use all 2-row
without any specialties and it would still be just fine. Enjoy.

I don't know why more people don't extol the virtues of reusing yeast. If
you're careful with your sanitation, it's an extremely effective way to reduce the
costs. Once you make 5-10 batches out of a single $6 vial, it's basically free.

I've been resuing the same few yeast strains since early this spring when the
LHBS closed stopped selling HB supplies. I keep a "master" chunk of sludge in a
carefully sanitized 2-liter bottle. Before brewday, I add some boiled/cooled DME to
it and let it take off for awhile. Then, I dump only 1/2 to 2/3 of it in the beer.
Also, I'll occasionally save the primary trub in a different bottle for an
"alternate," and routinely rack on top of previous cakes.

True. Hops are generally a fairly small proportion of a batch... unless you
try to get crazy.

Not to play "mine is bigger," but for a lightish beer I've gotten it quite a
bit lower than that. For a friend's party, I brewed a "Pussy Party Pale Ale" that was
essentially a Budweiser in Ale form. It was something like this:

5 lbs 2-row ($35 for 55lb bag = > $3.20)
2 lbs Wal-mart rice ($6 for 20 lbs? I don't remember... basically free)
1/2 lb Wheat ($12 for 10 lbs = > $0.60)
1/2 lb Crystal 40 ($12 for 10 lbs = > $0.60)
1 oz Fuggles ($12 for 1 lb = > $0.75)
Recycled California Ale yeast cake

IIRC, it was about $6 for 5 gallons of about 1.052- >1.006. I wasn't real fond
of it, but it was a BIG hit at the party. Basically tasted like megabrew (with slight
fruity ale character).

I've also made a wicked good oatmeal stout using about the same ingredients
(a little more 2-row, trade some rice off for oatmeal, add roasted barley to stoutify
it)... maybe $8-10 for a 1.065 point oatmeal stout.

Item # Description Qty Amount Delete
ME12 Ultralight Extract (25 lbs.) $49.75
Hcaslb Cascade Pellets (1 lb) $9.25
GR540 Crystal 40L $1.35
GR560 Crystal 60L $1.35
GR562 Crystal 120L $1.35

Total $65.75

Free ground shipping since it's over $60.

That's 4 batches of APA/AIPA for $16.44 each. The only kicker is the
initial $65.75 if cash is really, really tight, but go try to buy 3 six
packs for $16.44 and see how fast two cases for that price seems pretty
nice.

If you already have the equipment for all-grain--including a mill--then
you can try to roll the dice with feed grains. As seen in some other
threads, I'm dabbling in it right now. I'm not dead yet from it, but it
does concern a lot of brewers what goes into feed grain.

I first fooled around with it to get a 50/50 6-row/corn malt American
lager that I figured would be light yet much more flavorful than its
counterparts. I'm still toying with it, but at $7 per 50lb bag, it
doesn't set me back much financially to dabble.

I made a Hefeweizen from 100% home-malted feed wheat--there were some
rice hulls to prevent a stuck sparge. That was another $7 buy for a
50lb sack.

This probably won't be too feasible if you can't mill.

Try a pale mild (converted from an AG recipe):

3.67 lbs DME
10 ozs. medium crystal
1 oz Fuggles (~ 4%) 60 minutes
Dry yeast

OG: 1.036 @ 5 gal

(I use WLP005 but it ain't cheap.)

Decent session beer. Use a good fermentable DME.

No recipes but just general hints.
If you have a LHBS nearby buy your LME in a bulk container. Bring in
your own container so you won't get charged for a new container each
time. Use one of the good dry yeasts that are readily available instead
of the more expensive liquid yeasts. Those two things will save you
$6-$8 per batch.

All-grain is WAY cheaper than extract on a per-gallon basis.
With extract, you are paying someone to extract the fermentables
from the grain.

The cheapest way to buy grain and hops is in bulk. Organize a
bulk grain order with your local homebrewing club. IIRC, North
Country Malt gives a pretty big price break at 1000 lbs.

If you can afford the up-front cost, buying in bulk will have
you brewing on the cheap for weeks or months.

You can use the spent grain to make bread, or to fertilize your
garden, saving even more money.

I just priced it at Midwest for $30 with shipping. Where are you
shopping online? Thank you for the help.

Also, I dont have the all grain set up so I cannot do that. Remember, I
am on a big time budget.

http://www.brewbyyou.com/index.html
6# LME - $10.50
1# Crystal 60LB - $1.25
1# dark brown sugar - $.75
3oz hops pellets - $2.85 or you can buy 4oz for $2.95 or 1# (4 X 4oz any kind) for $10
1oz hops plugs - $1.50
1 packet yeast - $1.50

I usually buy the Hops Special of 4 X 4oz pack of pellets (any kind) for $10,
which brings the price of the 3oz used down to $1.88. So its not exactally
$17 per batch if you count shipping.. maybe like $22.

Yeah very much so. Their bulk LME and bulk hops are the best
prices I've found. I've bought these items from them almost
ten times in the past 11 months, and never had a problem.
They will even crack the grains for you for free. First time
purchase gets $10 off shipping (which was free since my shipping
is $9)

I still go to my LHBS from time to time.. but they charge about
$13 for 3.3# can or LME, $2oz pellets, and forget it if you want
hardware. WOW! If I need something in a hurry, they are there
and have a lot.. but for the staples that I can order ahead of
time online.
