The sole labor advantage of of a conical is that you avoid rackiny and are able primary and secondary in the same vessel by harvesting the yeast. I decided not to get one because (1) it lacks the 60 degree slope of a conical which causes the yeast to slide down and I am concerned that yeast will collect on the horizontal surface above the neck forcing me to rack anyway; and (2) the space below the valve and the surface upon which the toy is mounted doe not appear to be conducive to people with large hands. But it is $29.90 plus shipping. So if you want to try it, go ahead and report back your experience. Dick

Also there is not enough room under the valve to place a container to catch the liquid once the valve is opened. A shallow container will splash the liquid upward and you will have quite a mess to clean up. You can partially solve this problem by using a plastic bag to hold the liquid released when opening the valve but you have to be pretty quick to manipulate the vavle to prevent losing a good quantity of brew. Elevating the stand will work but it is really not very sturdy and you may experience a carboy full of youi favorite brew crashing onto the floor as you attempt to turn it upside down into the stand. No a pretty picture! <G > Bill > But it is $29.90 plus shipping. So if you want to try it, > go ahead and report back your experience. > > Dick

The sides of a carboy are not steep enough to make an effective conical. Don't waste your money. John.

I've never used one personally, but I've read lot's of comments on them over the years. In general, most people find that the sides of a carboy don't have a steep enough slope to effectively remove yeast and trub. Google groups for "Carboy Conical Converter" for more comments. -- (Replies: cleanse my address of the Mark of the Beast!)
