I had always used an IC but switched to CFC a few months ago and was quite
happy with it until today's IPA-in spite of whirlpooling and directing the
end of the pickup tube carefully,CFC line stopped up with hops (+ cold
break?) over and over...any suggestions to avoid this...I use pellets

Thanks

Some kind of screen on the pickup tube?

I don't see how that will help with the toothpaste like slurry that pellets
produce...does anybody else have experience with such a screen?

I tried to use a screen once to filter hop pellet
debris. It clogged.

I guess hop pellets do something different for me-I always get a toothpaste
like substance which would NOT be filter...how does a hop bag help that?

I'm skeptical too. It seems like anything fine enough to catch
hop pellet particles would probably clog.

I second the hop bag idea. I always used one with pellets.

You'd probably have to use a pretty tight screen. Like others said, that
might lead to clogging problems. You'd at least have to clean off the
screen a number of times. IMO, pellets are just a pain in general. In my
experience, whole hops or plugs are a lot easier to filter out.

I'm joining this discussion late, so I missed the OP's question.

On the subject of containing pellet hops, in my last several batches I've
tried some different things to hold them. Hop/herb balls, muslin bag,
whirlpool/siphoning, and I've come back to my first solution: Nylons

A 6-pack of knee-high nylons, 'nude' color costs about $2.50-$3. That's 6
batches. Dump in your hops, tie a knot near the top, and let it float.

Doesn't appear to affect the beer in any way that I can find, except color.
I did notice that if you use the darker colors, they'll come out paler than
when they went in. That color went somewhere. Haven't noticed any color
change in the lighter colors, though.

HTH, TMMV.

Look at the Hop Stopper or use hop bags in the boil.

Muslin bags work for me at containing the majority of the pellet
sludge. Additionally, I have a false bottom that does provide some
help especially when at least an ounce of whole hops are used. Paint
strainer bags are popular because they have a smaller mesh. Many
brewers also use screens similar to the Hop Stopper I posed about
earlier with positive results.

Sorry, but that is just gross...both the idea of boiling with used hose
AND the yeast! It did make me laugh, though...
