Subject: Bubbles Stop after one day

I just made a nice Amber XX, and it was bubbling like crazy in the
fermenter the first day or so. I notice now that there seems to be no
activity.

Am I just being impatient?

Also, I just ordered my first keg kit for this patch too. WOOHOO

Thanks,

Jim

What is the current SG and what was the starting SG (or recipe if you don't
know the starting SG)? The bubbles by themselves don't really mean
much. The SG will tell you a lot more about what is going on with the
fermentation. It's possible that it fermented out in one day if the temps
were relatively high and the starting SG was relatively low. However,
being patient won't hurt anything.

It won't hurt the beer to leave it alone. I'd give it several more days
at least and then check the gravity to see what it is doing.

This is my 4th batch of beer, and havent really done the gravity
measurements. The recipe is below:

INGREDIENTS (INCLUDED): EQUIPMENT NEEDED:
3.3 lbs. Plain Amber Malt Extract
2 lbs. Plain Light Dry Malt Extract
8 oz. Rice Syrup Solids
6 oz. Crushed Crystal Malt 60L
1 each Grain Steeping Bag
1 oz. Hallertau Hops (Bittering)
1/2 oz. Saaz Hops (Finishing)

I'd just leave it alone for now. If you're not sure about what is happening
though, taking gravity readings is the only way to really find out. It's
not difficult, and is a good thing to learn how to do for the future.

The OG (original gravity) should have been around 1.042 give or take a couple
points. That will come in handy if you do need to diagnose what is going
on later. Usually the OG and FG (final gravity) are compared against each
other to figure out how fermentation is progressing.

What was the temperature where the fermentor was? I've had ales finish
in under 24 hours if the temperature is high ~90.

This is a pretty consistent 74F.

I'd take a gravity reading record it and wait a day maybe two and take
another. It sounds like it's done but your patience will be rewarded.
I have a wee heavy scottish ale that's been in the fermentor since
Saturday and it is still going like gang busters, however the OG was
1.085!! I went down the cellar steps and all I could smell was
fermenting beer! :)
