Subject: Brupaks question

I'm onto my 2nd kit and it's a Brupaks Colne Valley bitter. Pleased to
see the hop bag but not sure how I can use it as I'm not yet set up for
boiling more than 4-5 litres or so just now.

can anyone tell me:
* For bittering is it possible to boil the hops in say, 3-4 litres of
wort and add that into the bulk in the fermenter?
* If I wanted to use the hops for just aroma when should I give them
their 5-10 mins in the wort?

thanks in advance

A

You won't get as much bitterness from them versus boiling in a larger
volume, however it will work.

Anytime, you could even "dry hop" and add them to the secondary fermenter
for a week or two.

Just to be sure I'm clear (after reading the above, I don't think I was). If
you are going to add the hops for 5-10 minutes of the boil, then you
definitely want to do that at the end of the boil, rather than say do it
at the beginning 5 minutes of the boil and take them out. Or you could
put them in after you turn the heat off after the boil.

Regarding dry hopping, I wouldn't add them during the primary active
fermentation, but anytime after the activity slows down is fine. Most
people generally do it in the secondary.
