Hey All, I'm making my first batch of beer now, it's a kit called Brew House. I'm doing the India Pale Ale one. Anyone try it? Just looking for some insight as to what the finished product will be like. Thanks Scott

I like the IPA. It's actually a little hoppier than it previously was (I've had it a few times over the past 3 years and the hop profile has changed slightly, more flavour now imho). I actually was drinking one the other night. It was brewed with either 1056 or 1028 (sorry can't remember) and an ounce of northern brewer thrown in the primary. It was nice and grassy/piney with the added hops, very crisp and clean. W/o added hops or liquid yeast it is still good, but I like the crispness/dryness of the liquid yeast (higher attenuation with the 1028?). All in all I think the IPA is my fave of the brewhouse kits (well maybe the stout in the winter). As for other brew house beers: The pale ale is a crowd pleaser. Easy to drink, enough hops to taste but not a lot of bittering hops. I always throw some saaz in the pilsner and it's quite good that way. Cervesa style is kinda boring, but clean and does resemble what it should. American lager is boring, and too malty to be an american lager in my opinion. I like the german dark lager (reminds me of a local beer I enjoy), but the last one I made was too light (quality control isn't always the best with them). When I've liked it, it was clean yet had nice dark tones to it (ie not too malty). I like the stout. I usually will do it as a 19L (as opposed to 23L) to thicken it up a bit (and sometimes put a cup or two of dextrose in as well to bring up the alc content). The red is easy to drink, malty and smooth. Not enough hops for me though (not enough to counteract the maltiness). I haven't had the cream lately. oberfest is good. Haven't done the wheat and won't until I order some appropriate yeast (I like wits and heffs a lot, fermenting with coopers just seems wrong and a waste of the kit). I need the clove and banana flavour from a wit yeast! There was some kind of light lager I tried.. didn't like it much, but still more drinkable than a lot of commercial lagers. Still I don't understand why they call it a lager and sell it with coopers ALE yeast.. not really a lager if it isn't lager yeast and lagered.. oh well. I haven't made that one, but I'm sure it'll be good (if you like IPA). I have made the following BrewHouse kits: Pale Ale (not India) - excellent Pilsner - excellent Munich Dark Lager - failed to excite me Winterfest Ale - quite good Prairie Wheat - a bit early to tell, but probably very good. I made it with yeast cultured from a bottle of Hoegarden, not the Coopers yeast it came with I used to make canned extract kits, but I think these BrewHouse wort-in-a-bag kits are much nicer. There are only a few canned kits I'd consider doing in the future. Jeff Hay-Roe Gibsons, British Columbia
