Subject: Bottled yeast had bad odor

I just used a White Labs Czech Budejovice Lager Yeast #WLP802, (yes I
know it's middle of the summer time...) and when I opened the vial there
was a real bad odor in the yeast, almost like a fart. I have read that
some of the Czech strains have a "sourness" to them that is supposed to
be there. Is this what I am smelling or did this yeast have too long a
ride in the hot UPS truck? Anybody else ever noticed yeast getting this
rotten, or sour smell?
Thanks...

Don't worry about it, I used that yeast a few months ago and it
produced a sulphurus rotten egg smell. It dissappeared with ageing.
Great yeast by the way.

Was it a sulfur smell? Some yeast are known for producing that during
fermentation, although I'm not sure I've heard of one doing it in the
vial before though.

Yeah, I guess it could be described as a sulfur smell. Sorta like
rotten eggs. I can taste a "hint" of it in the beer but I am hopeing it
will dissappear as the beer ages, like most yeast tastes do.
