Subject: Blew the lid off the fermentor

I brewed a honey ale on Tuesday. Started the yeast on Sunday. Got a little carried away and boiled 6 gallons of drinking water for the batch. Not as much evaporated as I thought would. Recipe called for 2 lbs of honey, I think I put about 3 to 3.5 lbs in :0 Recipe called for an OG of 1.061 and I was at 1.070 No signs of fermenting (plastic bucket) through this morning in the fridge. Had to go out of town and got back late today. The airlock was full of crud and the top was blown open on the fermentor. Opps. So I put the top back down, cleaned out the airlock, and put it back on. I noticed that this batch was a little bigger than the others I've done so there was not as much head space. I think the Crausen got blown into the airlock and that clogged it up. I'm going out of town Tomorrow and will be back on Tuesday. I don't think there is much I can do. When I put the cover on with a clean airlock it was still bubbling away.

Forget about the airlock til you get back. Use a blowoff tube or just cover loosely, there's plenty of CO2 to keep things safe for a while. I just cover my fermenter (6gal carboy) with a piece of aluminum foil until things have settled down. You don't need an airlock at first.

Hi Brian- you need a blowoff tube, my man. if your siphon tube fits in the air-lock hole, try using that; dip the other end in a big bowl of water and make sure it stays submerged. it will probably still be fermenting when you get back tuesday, so don't worry if it doesn't fit super snugly- your beer will probably not oxidize too much. you can put the airlock back in when you return after the fermentation quiets down. keep everything clean, of course, but if you're in a big hurry don't sweat it too much. -Alf Brian Foster wrote: > I brewed a honey ale on Tuesday. I Have a truce with my child bride of no bottle bombs and never again a fermentation overflow. So I use a blowoff tube on all my fermenters. I use a three piece airlock http://tinyurl.com/kkozt snip off the bevel at the lower end, attach a plastic hose to the upper end and, run in it into a have filled gallon of water. Dick

I cover it with plastic and a large homemade elastic band (elastic from the fabric store). You can sanitize the plastic sheeting and no bugs (fruit flies etc) can get in. Of course I don't leave it long before I rack it to glass.

Mine never got that bad but I have done a couple where I cracked the lid and let it ooze out the side till the krausen fell. Gerard

I did this once with a cherry beer, I missed a skin or two when I strained the wort and a piece got stuck in the bottom of the air-lock.
