I strongly suggest you find your LHBS (Local Homebrew Store)
and see what they have to offer for the simple reason that
their ingrediants will be fresher.

In my experience, the Beer Machine and Mr. Beer are usually
bought as presents, e.g., Birthdays, Father's Day, Christmas.
Over the last five years, friends have dropped three of them
off with me and asked me to make them for them. NO problemo
since I keep their plastic bottles and give them the resulting
beer in 1 liter soda bottles.

None of these people purchased one on their own.

You are sure to get lots of reply's to this. I had a beer machine myself
and I can tell you that it is very easy to make beer in this kit but
your batches will be small, somewhat expensive per bottle, and the
quality will be lower than you might expect. I also found it hard to get
the seal just right.

If you want to make beer I recommend you get involved with a local beer
club. Members are frequently looking for someone to brew with and will
split batches if you can pay for your share of the supplies. This is a
good way to learn the process before spending money on equipment.

One last plug. If you want to go small I'd say a good beginners setup is
about $200 including supplies That would give you a burner, pot, couple
of carboys, capper, carboy brush, and the materials to make beer. You
can do it cheaper if you are willing to cobble together stuff or get
stuff used.

The Beer Machine is one of several, and I don't remember exactly which one
it is, but if it has an ingrediants kit, which I believe they all do, These
things tend to sit on the shelf for extended periods and they are usually
not fresh.

If you have a local homebrew store, they can sell you an equipment kit, and
an ingrediants kit for a comparable price, you will get two or three times
as much beer, and it will be much better beer.

On the ingrediants kit, try to steer clear of the kit and a kilo type kits,
and make sure the malt extract, hops, and yeast are fresh.

If you can't get fresh ingrediants locally, go to one of the online
suppliers.

The point of the Beer Machine, Mr. Beer etc. is not to buy it yourself, but
to get one as a gift. They are at good holiday price points and don't
require much thought. After the spouse or kids give you one, you have a
perfect alibi for replacing things a piece at a time.

I read somewhere that a very high percentage of these things are sold for
Father's Day. That's how I got mine!

Next time, you won't beat your kids and maybe you'll get a good gift.

This is how I received mine as well and it was my introduction to the
world of beer brewing.

IMO, don't waste your money. For the same price you can get a much better
equipment kit from a homebrew store that will allow you a lot more
flexibility.
