Twice a year I brew 10 gallons of an Arrogant Bastard clone. It hasn't been to a competition yet because most of it, as I tell my child bride, goes into pre-competition Quality Assurance Testing. (She believes me and that's all that counts.) Hopefully this next batch will see a competition. The BJCP guidelines specifically list Arrogant Bastard Ale as an Imperial IPA. Try as I might I've not been able to conjure up a recipe where the SRM's below 22. I could argue that it is a Strong Ale where almost all high ABV, thick malt, and heavily hopped ales are in style. What would you do? Also and very important, I keg and consider bottling a PITA. Should I bottle from a bottling bucket or from a keg for competition? I can do either. Dick

I am pretty sure Arrogant Bastard defies categorization -- you might be best off entering it in the Specialty category. Otherwise, screw 'em, go ahead and put it in the Imperial IPA category. Appearance is only worth 3 points out of 50, at worst you would only lose 2 points because it's a bit too dark, if you're lucky you'd only get docked 1 point. It's up to you if that's something you can live with or not. > Also and very important, I keg and consider bottling a PITA. > Should I bottle from a bottling bucket or from a keg for > competition? I can do either. Bottle from a keg, I'm sure it'd be much easier. -- Dave "Just a drink, a little drink, and I'll be feeling GOOooOOooOOooD!" -- Genesis, 1973-ish

This is the recipe I used except I used amarillo instead of centennial cause my LHBS was out of it. : Amber DME 4.0 pounds Wheat DME 4.0 pounds *Special-B 8.0 ounces *Biscuit 8.0 ounces *Aromatic 8.0 ounces *CaraMunich 8.0 ounces Corn Sugar (Bottling) .75 cups Magnum (Bittering - 60 min.) 1.0 ounces Columbus (Bittering - 50 min.) 0.5 ounces Centennial (Flavoring - 30 min.) 0.5 ounces Centennial (Finishing - Dry) 1.0 ounces Irish Moss 1.0 package Wyeast #1056 American Ale 1.0 package Good luck on entering your version. The problem is Arrogant Bastard is not brewed to style which is why I think it could be either an Old Ale or a Specialty Beer. Mine is even darker than amber. > This is the recipe I used except I used amarillo instead of > centennial cause my LHBS was out of it.
