Just ordered 2 oz from Northern Brewer. If you've used them, was it only for bittering? Here's their description: Typical alpha: 17.0 - 19.0%. A brand new super-high alpha dwarf variety grown on low trellis systems in the Yakima valley. It has a low cohumulone content with a strong orange/tangerine citrus character. I'm thinking American IPA similar to a Bells 2 Hearted ale since it has a citrus quality. Will use these for bittering, Centennial for flavor/aroma.

I used 1 oz at 18% in a high gravity (1.078 OG, 1.019 FG) steam beer a while ago. It turned out great - crisp, doesn't overpower the malt at all. I used 1 oz Summit at 60 min, then 1 oz Northern Brewer at 30 min and another 1 oz Northern Brewer at 5 min. > > I'm thinking American IPA similar to a Bells 2 Hearted ale since it has > a citrus quality. Columbus for 60 minutes, .5 oz Columbus for 5 minutes and dry hopped with 1 oz. Columbus. Wyeast 1272 (American Ale II). The flavor is exactly as advertised with very smooth bittering. This was my 1st pass at this recipe. Next time I'll probably eliminate the 60 minute addition. I may even go Summit only. -Vladimir

Glad it turned out well to your tastes, but you ABV would have been 5.25%, a little low for an IPA, and the FG was quite high. Your attenuation was just 65%. Specs on that yeast predict 72-76%. (I know I'm butting in here, as you're not the OP, nor did you ask, but I'm naturally curious about these things. Forgive me.) I make almost exclusively IPAs and IIPAs and I can imagine summit would go great with some amarillo and simcoe, which is currently may favorite hop. Gerard >
