I'm considering going all-grain. Since I know where to get 30qt turkey- fryers for only $37, I was thinking of using a 3-tier system of fry-pots as HLT - > mash/lauter tun -> boil kettle. I just need to modify each pot with a weldless fitting and get a "Phil's Sparger" for the lauter tun. Then I get a 10" stainless steel false bottom for both the lauter tun and the brew kettle, along with 1/2" thermoplastic tubing (rated up to 275 degrees). My only real question (though all feedback is welcome) regards the barbed connector on the inside of the weldless fitting. Assuming I go with the "Weldless Basic Plus" from Northern Brewer, would I want a male pipe thread or female pipe thread fitting? SS only comes in male, so would brass be ok to boil in my beer? Thanks for any input! Tom -- TARogue (t o m (at) t a r o g u e . n e t) "So I hated life, because what is done under the sun was grievous to me; for all is vanity and a chasing after wind." I believe U will find it difficult to maintain stable mash temps in a metal mash/lauter pot smaller than 15 gallons which is why most people use insulated coolers.Get a cylindrical 10 gallon " Igloo" cooler and add a SS false bottom (best) or SS mesh tubing or CPVC pipe manifold. The cylinders are more efficient than the rectangular ones...many people feel the "Phils sparger" is unnecessary.Take a look at various 3 tier setups on the 'net or look at howtobrew.com for connections.BTW,the mash tun converted from an ice chest does NOT require elaborate washers, etc. for the drain system as howtobrew.com shows.Just drill a hole slightly smaller than the OD of the tube you plan to use (usually 3/8" Cu tube) through the cooler spigot and force it in...it will NOT leak-check the 'net for more info. -- Thanks Hank :17

I've been using a 30qt boil kettle and I have to monitor the boil extrememly carefully but still get boilovers frequently. With trub, spent hops and other misc sludge in the bottom of the kettle I try to have about 6 gallons after the boil so at least 5.5 goes into the fermenter, that means I have to fill the 30qt boil kettle to the very top. _Randal

Thanks to everyone for the ideas. Now I need to adjust my wish list to include a larger brew kettle and a mash/lauter tun cooler. Tom -- TARogue (t o m (at) t a r o g u e . n e t) The trouble with unemployment is that the minute you wake up in the morning you're on the job. --Slappy White
