My chest freezer died. I'm torn between replacing it with another 5 cu
ft model or spending a little more for an 8.8 cu ft. How many
kegs/carboys does a 8.8 typically hold?

i just purchased an 8.8 cu ft. chest freezer from a guy on
craigslist.com. the freezer is nearly new, works great, and i only paid
$100. not sure where you are located, but if it is anywhere near a
major city i would give craigslist a try. i have even seen some
freezers free to the first taker.

not sure how many kegs my freezer would hold (not into kegging yet). at
some point i plan on turning it into a kegerator. however, i think i
may only be able to fit one carboy in there at a time. the left side of
the freezer is not as deep as the right (houses the freezing unit
stuff). i haven't tried it yet, but i don't think i will have enough
height on the left side.

Craigslist is great. I got a excellent price on an almost new
LazyBoy recliner which is a godsend for my back.

However FreeCycle.org is significantly for two reasons:
1) Everything is free; and
2) FreeCycle is much more localized.

I live just west of Ballamer (Baltimore - the city that slurs).
Craigslist has one group for my area and most of Maryland.
FreeCycle has at least 10 groups within 60 miles of Ballamer.

From Freecycle, I have gotten a refrigerator. a freezer, a shopvac,
a computer printer, a set of beer glasses, a pony keg, two corney
kegs, four empty propane tanks, several wine bottles, and a lot more.

You make it sound like a "Pack Rat" paradise. ;-)

I measured the diameter of my primary carboys when I went shopping for
a freezer. I wanted to be able to fit 2 in it. I *think* mine is an
8.8 cu ft model. I will check when I get home and re-post.

Works well as a "small, alternate cellar" when it gets too warm in my
basement in the Summer.

The freezer in the picture above is indeed an 8.8 cu ft model.
According to my measurements it should hold two 6.5 gal primaries,
though I haven't done that yet. It holds a 6.5 and a 5 and a
buncha bottles with ease, though.

I currently use an 8.8 cu ft freezer for my kegs. I can only fit 4
kegs in it. I also keep my CO2 tank in it, but removing it would not
allow another keg, else I'd have it outside the freezer. I've been
happy with it, but wish I had gone to at least a 10.0 cu ft so I could
have a couple more kegs on tap.

There is a shelved area that I assume goes around the compressor or
something, but it forms a step inside of my freezer; I can fit both of
my 3 gallon corny kegs on it, so my total capacity would be 26 gallons
of beer. That'd be great if they were all different varieties, but
since I brew in 10 gallon batches, it gets a bit crowded at times :)

I have plans to run a tower right through the center of the lid, but
have not gotten that far yet, so I'm still using handlines. The CO2
block will accomodate 3 kegs, plus a line I have left open to put the
Beer Gun on when I need to fill a growler or a couple Grolsch bottles
with cider or beer.

All probably more info than needed, but to sum up; I've been happy with
the 8.8 cu ft freezer, just wish it was bigger at times. I suppose
that I'd feel that way if it were a 15 cu ft too :)

Brew On!

Sometimes there's just never enough cubic feet. Ask Mike Dixon.

I can fit 4 kegs into my 7-ft^3 freezer. Depending on how it's set up, you
might be able to squeeze another keg into a larger freezer, or maybe not.
(Try to find a freezer that, like mine, has the compressor under a bump in a
corner, instead of a shelf that runs front-to-back.)
