Subject: Yet another foamy question
I can't seem to get my keg balanced. I've
researched the net and tried everything I found. I
run 10psi (if the guage is accurate, I've ordered
another) and currently 5' of 3/8" hose. I've tried
lengths from 3-7' My seals seem good. The temp is
37F and there is only a couple inch rise to the tap.

The only thing I can think of that may be causing
the foam is my shanks being incompatible with my
Shirron faucets.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks,
Andrew

As Mr. Salty says, the effect of that extra 1/16" is huge. If you want
to run at 10 PSI, I think you'll have luck with about 10 feet of 3/16"
tubing. You could use a shorter tube, but the extra length gives you
the flexibility to serve at higher temperatures if you want. Just coil
it up and tape it -- or tie it with zip ties.

My mistake. I had asked for 3/16" at the brew shop
and I received 1/4". I had to measure it to be
sure. Once I get the proper diameter I'm sure the
foaming will get better.

I was unable to get 3/16" hose over the barb on my cheapo plastic
faucet head. FYI.

Use a lubricant -- keg lube works, or food grade silicone spray. You
could also maybe use vaseline or KY, but I seem to recall that these can
weaken certain materials over time (but I could be wrong). Trust me --
the fit. It's just a very *tight* fit -- <borat >like-a my sister</borat>.

Petroleum-based lubricants can weaken latex, and possibly rubber. I
don't know if it would cause a problem for the tubing. KY is water-
based, and shouldn't cause a problem.

However, before trying that, try holding the end in hot/boiling water
for a minute or so to soften it up. Then ram the barb down in. That's
what seems to work for me.

3/8 inch is way too big -- you could have 50 feet of that and still have
foaming.

You need to be using 3/16th (5-6 feet).

You're absolutely right. I am, in fact, currently
using 5' of 1/4" hose. I had assumed it was 3/16"
until I measured it just now.

Yah -- that would still be way too wide. Try 3/16 bev, and you should
get rid of the foaming.

I'll grab it in the morning.

Thanks.
