Wheat beer returns to Hoegaarden
Mon 10/09/07 - The Belgian-Brazialian drinks group InBev is returning
the production of the white-coloured wheat beer to Hoegaarden. This
was announced by the brewery on Monday.
The famous Hoegaarden wheat beer was produceded in brewery De Kluis
from 1966. Last year InBev decided to move the production to Jupille,
near the Walloon city of Liege.

This led to much protest, not only because of the potential loss of
jobs, but also because the move was seen as the demise of a local
tradition.
Allegations very soon cropped up that InBev would not succeed in
brewing the same quality of wheat beer in Jupille. And indeed, much of
the production had to be thrown away and delivery problems resulted.
In future, wheat beer will only be brewed in Hoegaarden. InBev is
investing more money in the production and a logistics outfit to
upgrade the site in Hoegaarden.
It is not yet certain what the consequences of the move back to
Hoegaarden will be for the personnel. Inbev will give more explanation
later in the day.
Inbev is investing close to 60 million euro in the breweries in
Hoegaarden, Leuven and Jupille over the next few years.
"Courageous of the management"
The trade unions of InBev protested for a long time against moving
production of the wheat beer to Jupille. They are now very happy that
the management has decided to definitively transfer the production
back to Hoegaarden.
"It is courageous of the management to come back on their decision to
brew wheat beer in Jupille," says Roger Van Vlasselaer of the
socialist trade union ABVV.
