Subject: Regarding Utopia
I'm in one of the backwoods states where Utopias are not sold. Just out of
curiosity, how is it packaged? Is it in small bottles (and sold in group -
like beer) or is it sold in a larger bottle like a whiskey? Also, how much
are they selling it for? I realize this may vary from state to state, but I
am going out of town next week and I may try to purchase some...

I agree that the price is a bit high for average weekend consumption,
but you have to admit that Sam Adams has created a first. After all,
they broke the record for alcohol content in a fermented beverage. I
look forward to trying it, but I'm not exactly going to be breaking
out the bottle for my BudMilloorslight swilling neighbors, lol.

In your hands, it is inventory and its value is the
sum of your out-of-pockets costs.

How long is Utopia aged before becoming available for sale
is a major issue if it is to be compared with high grade
scotch whiskies. Utopia appears to me to be a high grade
American Barleywine, but its price does not appear to me
to be in-line with the Barleywine market, but rather in-line
with the "conspicuous consumption" market where people are
willing to pay $100 for a liter of bottled water..

It takes a bit more work (and, at first, it took a fair bit of R&D
developing the yeast and the techniques needed to use it) to produce a
fermented beverage with 25% abv than your average barleywine (which only
manages about 9-11% abv).

I think it's in 750 ml bottles and >$100 to $200 (US) per bottle. I'm

They are in 750 ml copper "bottles". Really a good looking container.
Around here they are sold (offered, really, as I don't know of many
actually being sold) for around $125. This sounds really outrageous at
first, but stop and think of what a really fine bottle of wine goes for.
This is not something you are going to pound down a sixer of while
watching football on tv. This is something you will sip slowly from a
small glass after a nice quiet, really elegant meal like you would a
fine cognac. I have had the opportunity to try this beer several times
(once with Jim Koch himself) and can vouch for the quality of this
stuff. The flavor is much more like a fine port or cognac than a beer.
If I could afford it, I would keep a bottle around to sip on special
occasions.

Even crown doesn't cost $7.50 an ounce. Now there's a clone you could save a
few bucks on. If you made a 5 gallon batch and lost it due to an "accident"
I wonder if you could claim it on your home owners insurance. 5 gallons =
640oz x $7.50 = $4800.00

Perhaps, but the price of Utopias is in line with high grade scotch
whiskies, which are consumed in similar serving sizes.
