Subject: Racking cane for small batches?
|
I do small batches of wine/mead -- between a liter and a gallon at a time -- and I've been wondering if it's worth buying a racking/siphoning setup. It seems I can just carefully decant the brew off the sediment with small batches like this, but maybe I don't know what I'm missing. One potential benefit would be that I could probably more easily keep oxygen out of the brew as I transfer it with a proper racking cane and siphon, while also keeping more of the dissolved CO2 due to less splashing. But I'm not sure any of that is really worth it, and I am trying to keep my total amount of equipment (and therefore required storage space) to a minimum. But if it would make my life a lot easier, or do a better job keeping the sediment out, I don't mind dropping a few bucks on it. TIA for any advice. -- Randall

You don't need a cane for small batches. It coils up for storage. Easier? Probably not. But it will reduce oxygen. Bob
