First r.c.b. is ruined by a sporge flood, which might be subsiding, and
now some jackass hits it and alt.beer.home-brewing with a long string of
MI5 posts that I'm sure nearly all of us can do without. I just wish
those SOBs would take up homebrewing and use their time constructively.

Anyway, on-topic now. I want to thank folks on these forums for all the
help they have given me in various areas over the years -- most recently
to discuss some brewing books. I've decided to get "Designing Great
Beers" and will check with my local homebrew shop on my next trip,
probably next week. I figure that by the time I pay shipping, his price
probably won't be more than a couple or three dollars higher, and I like
to support him.

I'm just taking a quick break now. I've been out in my garden cleaning
up my 'hop yard' of some of the crab grass that made it's way in there;
it's a labor of love, though. I did pretty well for my first year, and
harvested about 42 ounces of hops, which I plan to use solely for flavor
and aroma, so I should be set for awhile; predictions are that my
harvest could double, or better, next year.

I have two 5-gallon batches in carboys from last weekend when I brewed
again with my homegrown hops. I've been drinking some of my previous
batch that I 'wet-hopped' with cones picked straight from the bines, and
it's pretty good if I say so myself, so I'm anxious for these last two
batches.

I also want to mention that I have expanded the scope of my 'Grow-Hops'
group to also include growing herbs and grains for brewing. I figure
that anyone interested in growing hops might likely be interested in at
least herbs. I know that I'm going to try some next year.

Well, thanks again. And if anyone is interested in my group, it's
listed in my signature block.

The sporge I wasn't expecting, however, the paranoid moron with the
"persecution" posts has been here since before I came along and he was
overdue for a visit...

I just bought "Designing" and am working through it right now. You're going
to enjoy it. I even got the 2nd edition of "How To Brew" to see what has
changed. The guy who runs my LHBS has been a friend for better than 15
years, his shop is only three years old. I support him whenever I can.

We all need a break, I'm just back from one. Hadn't brewed for a couple of
years, now I've done 4 assorted batches in the last 2 months. I'm going to
be getting a new house soon, so I'm going to pester your ear off about hops
when I create a raised bed for some. And I should join your group. I can
probably contribute on the herb side of things. You just going with the
brewing aspect or are you going for the whole 9? I've been herb gardening
for at least 5 years. I'd be happy to help you there if you would like.

It's going to be fun to use my own hops in a few years. (I'll have to plant
some first)

So, we'll talk to you soon.

I've slowed down a few times -- usually in the summer when it's hot and
then I might not jump back into it until pretty late in the year simply
because I've gotten myself involved in other projects, or whatever.
There was one very long break of a couple or three years after I moved
my gear up into the attic 'temporarily' and then basically forgot about
it. But I've been going pretty strong and consistent for the past few
years -- even brewing a little bit in the summer (did a double batch the
weekend before last) -- with only some short breaks, and I probably brew
at least once if not twice a month. In the past several years, I don't
think I've gone more that six or seven weeks without brewing, and then
if it's been awhile I tend to try to make up for it with a double batch
to help replenish my low supply of homebrew.

If you're going to grow hops, then you really ought to join our group; I
believe that you are much more likely to obtain good knowledgable advice
there quicker than anywhere else because of the size and experience of
our group (now 324 members). Admittedly, many are newbies, but from the
introductory posts of many new members, a _substantial_ percentage have
a _lot_ of experience. And I'm sure you won't be considered a pest. :-)
Meanwhile, your contribution of knowledge about herbs will help those of
us just starting in that area.

Most new growers receive at least _some_ harvest the FIRST year, with
the size of the crop then increasing over the next several years as the
plant becomes more established. I planted my first rhizomes this past
spring, and my harvest this summer, after drying them, was 42 ounces,
and was well worth the effort.

Cheers.
