Subject: Keg fittings aren't fitting on the keg...
|
I've recently picked up 5 ball-lock kegs. So far, so good. I disassembled each for soaking/cleaning, keeping each set of parts separate in case they're not interchangeable. No problem so far - but now to reassembly... For one keg, the liquid-out fitting won't fit back on the threaded post. It's as if the threads don't match, except that the thing CAME from that post. Just to check, I took another liquid-out fitting from another keg, but that went on without a problem. So I took the recalcitrant fitting and tried it on the other keg; still no go. I went to my LHBS and got two more fittings of the same kind, both from similar (used) kegs. They're clearly the same kind because neither of the new(ish) ones will fit either. Has anyone else run into this sort of thing before? If so, what did you do to fix it? Any ideas or suggestions? -- Don Levey $ cd /pub Framingham, MA $ more beer NOTE: email server uses spam filters; mail sent to salearn@the-leveys.us will be used to tune the blocking lists.

This might be a dumb question, but it's a mistake I made myself when I first got my kegs: Are you lifting the ring on the disconnect as you push it down? ;-) Also, it could be that the "IN" and "OUT" sides are mislabeled on your keg. I have one keg that's like that. On another keg, the "IN" side has a hex shaped post instead of the star shape that is typical for the gas side. That causes me occasional confusion also. Another possibility is that you've purchased a weirdo disconnect that's painted black but is, in fact, a gas disconnect. Scott

Scott, he means the stainless steel fitting than screws onto the keg. Seems that the threads no longer match.. -- Dan

If not, maybe that fitting wasn't really "ON" all the way when it was shipped. All of my 5 gallon kegs have Cornelius fittings and all of my 3 gallon kegs have Firestone (Challenger VI) fittings. They are not interchangable.. I much prefer the Cornelius fittings since they are smaller, easier to work with, less likely to strip and have poppets that come right out with little effort. -- Dan
