Subject: Heating Mash and Sparge Water with a Tankless Water Heater
Hi,

Have any of you incorporated a tankless hot water heater into your
brewing equipment? I saw a joke on tastybrew.com that referenced
using such a device for brewing and thought it sounded like a good
idea. When I brew, it seems like much of the time is spent heating
water to a specific temperature. It seems like a propane-fired
tankless hot water heater might be an easy way to save a lot of time
when brewing; one could even change temperature settings for mash,
sparge, etc.

I'm curious to hear your thoughts on this subject.

Thanks,

Be the first to try it. It's a tankless job, but someone's got to do it. ;-)

Brian

PS I don't read Tastybrew regularly, so if the same joke appeared there,
chalk it up to being soooo obvious.

Dan,

Thanks for sharing details of your system. Sounds like a brilliant
idea. I'm going to purchase a used hot water heater and do the same!

Cheers!

Bummer! At that price, if it didn't work, you wouldn't have been out
much at all!

I wonder how hot even a conventional gas hot water heater could be
cranked up to.

Cheers!

I use a 50 gallon electric water heater as a HLT. I have modified the
wiring a bit, added a circulating pump and clipped the stops on the
thermostat so that I can get the temperature to 180F. For safety reasons, I
added a second relief valve to the top of the tank as backup in case the
other ever fails. Been using it now for at least three years.

I don't know for sure, the one I have at work is set at 150° but I don't
know how much higher you can safely go before damaging equipment. I'm
sure the thermostat has a cutout to avoid overheating. I certainly
wouldn't want to override that thing. Think of the danger of a 50
gallon boiling water bomb!

I had plans for doing this in a system, but the issue is the temp rise
above ambient vs flowrate. If your water temp is say 60F then to reach
170F would take 110F rise so you would need to size the unit according
to the flow rate and those units aren't pocket change.

We are currently considering a whole house unit and it's quite a big
expenditure.

Cheers,
Mike
