Subject: Halcyon and Optic Malts
Anyone used these varieties? Impressions? Opinions? I was thinking
of trying them, but don't know if it would be worth the bother.

Try them both. They have subtle, but unique malt flavor/aromas that you will
likely find quite pleasant, especially in your English Ales [or American
Ales]. They are simply a variety of barley, like any other, so just try it
and judge for yourself.

I've used Halcyon (from the now-defunct Beeston maltings),
and liked it a lot. Good "British" character.
Also, I agree with Thomas' overall assessment, and will
add that malted barley is both and agricultural and industrial
product, so the quality of any particular batch depends on
variety, growing conditions, the malting process, etc.
