Something to consider...a rectangular cooler isless expensive, easier to
use, and works great.

But a bit more bulk and then you have to build a manifold of sorts
instead of using a false bottom.

Personally, I prefer manifolds to FBs. And the rectangular has the
advantage of a larger opening, which makes it easier to stir, and a
larger capacity.

Ok, makes sense. I haven't built one out of either, just seemed easier
with the Gott in my mind.

Personal preference, really. I use a 10 gallon Gott with a false bottom,
and love it. Easy to use, never had a problem. All in what you prefer...

In general I think you're right. There is only one relatively indisputable
argument in favor of a manifold over false bottom. Ever had your false
bottom float on you? That happened to me once after too many beers prior to
strike and I got a little overzealous when mixing the grist. That's a
mistake you make once with a false bottom.

Other than that, I think the rest is personal preference.

LOL, that would suck. I actually splurged on one of the stainless false
bottoms for the Gott and haven't had any problems, like that. That's one
nice thing about brewing: you can get as expensive or as cheap as you want,
and still make really good beer. A buddy of mine's grandfather is a chemist
and he has never actually bought anything to make beer with. He will only
use the equipment he already had from his days spent working in a lab. Not
a bad brewer, either... I have to admit, I still log on and admire the brew
sculptures from B3, every once in a while. My wife keeps telling me I can
buy one as long as I get her a baby grand piano, first... priorities,
priorities... hmmm, where did I put that college fund for the kids?

Those stainless steel false bottoms are really intended for kettles [with a
spigot]. I would either somehow weight or restrict the plastic false bottom
or do what most of us have done and create some kind of manifold. I have
tried perforated copper tubing with limitted success and have had great
success with an $11 Bazooka T-Screen. Many here use a cleaned stretch of
stainless steel mesh; something that Denny Conn seems to have pioneered and
that supposedly works very well and is quite cheap [you still need fittings in
some form]. I think my stainless steel false bottom in my kettle was on the
order of $70 ... way to expensive for a mash tun, especially considering the
significant heavy wort lost under it [potentially].

The stainless false bottoms from morebeer.com are just $28 for the
10-gallon size (http://morebeer.com/view_product/15571/102309) and
they're made for the round Rubbermaid coolers. The plastic Listerman
false bottoms were just the thing, until the stainless ones came along
for just a few dollars more. They lie flat so nothing gets underneath
them, and clean-up is a cinch (no more stuck bits of grain that won't
come out without poking each hole).

I just use the water hose [from the inlet to my therminator] to rinse my mash
tun. If a stray bit gets stuck here or there, I don't care; it will dry and
will be a very very insignificant portion of my next batch of beer ... and any
bacteria it might contribute will be killed in the boil anyway. I never more
than rinse my brew kettle or mash tun for this reason [actually, I
occassionally .. maybe annually, soak my kettle to remove some of the built up
resins that don't come out easily with a rinse and mild scrub].

So lemme get this straight...ya want to purchase/use a false bottom and
feel that is somehow superior...why?

The gott with false bottom is really only the best solution if you are
not mechanically inclined and have a pocketful of cash.

I'm going to build a mobile kegerator (A la Muth Design).
I've been shlepping 3 gallon kegs around with an open bucket, 5# CO2 and
its kind of a pain. This will be self contained and portable.

Dan,
You inspired me to update my pages to include the Beer On The Go cooler.
Here is the link..

Thanks for the reference and your thoughts.
BTW - that is a great find and price on the cooler.

Well I saw yours and said I had to build one! Just glad the Despot
finally got around to stocking the coolers. I'm tempted to buy a
second one for a mash tun.

Dan,

Don't be tempted... Just do it.
I have one that I fitted up as a mash tun. You will never regret it.

The Home Depot coolers are the Rubbermaids, with a Home Depot logo on'em.

I have easily fit 24 lbs. of grain in mine; with a thicker mash you
could *prolly* get 26.

Yes, Rubbermaid and logo.. not a big deal for me as I can always paint over
the logo with something else. I would ave preferred the blue and white one
